{"id":134644,"date":"2026-01-13T10:29:57","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T09:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torrevieja.com\/events\/international-pig-day-in-la-mata-2026\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T10:29:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T09:29:58","slug":"international-pig-day-in-la-mata-2026","status":"publish","type":"mec-events","link":"https:\/\/torrevieja.com\/en\/events\/international-pig-day-in-la-mata-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"International Pig Day in La Mata 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">Next Sunday, January 18, 2026, the &#8220;<strong>International Pig Day<\/strong>&#8221; is celebrated, where hundreds of people gather in the Plaza de La Mata to eat barbecued pork<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">The &#8220;Pe\u00f1a del cochino&#8221; of Torrelamata will distribute more than 600 kg of pork, 150 kilos of bread, celery, and 150 liters of wine on <strong>International Pig Day<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In the <strong>festivity of San Ant\u00f3n<\/strong>, the <strong>slaughter of the pig<\/strong> is traditionally celebrated throughout the region of Vega Baja<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This festival, also called &#8220;<strong>International Festival of the Iberian Product of Torrelamata&#8221;, <\/strong>brings together people from numerous towns in the Vega Baja as well as German, English and Scandinavian tourists.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each group of people who want to attend this gastronomic event can come with their tables, chairs, barbecue, food and drink.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1,000 people have participated in this &#8220;pig&#8221; festival in previous years, with no need for prior registration. It is enough to show up at the Plaza de Encarnaci\u00f3n Pujol de La Mata around 12 noon to pick up the pork.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Barrels of beer, hams to raffle, oranges, and bread, are provided by the merchants of La Mata to celebrate &#8220;the day of the pig&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<div
