  • upkeep of communal areas

I own a holiday home in Playa Flamenca which I visit at least six times per year. During my last visit I was appauled by the behaviour and personal habits of the residents (both owners and holiday makers). Especially in the communal pool area. I have witnessed women who insist in bringing hot and cold drinks along with their packed lunches. Adults and children eating bags of crisps whilst in the pool and the amount of people that find it necessay to smoke then discard their cigarette ends in the sunbathing areas is amazing! Showering before entering the pool is an alien concept to virtually everyone, it seems the only people to do this are the germans and Scandinavians.
These people all live within a 2 or 3 minute walk of their houses so the eating and smoking is simply not acceptable behavior.
I have spoken to our president about this problem but, he is at a lost as how to stop the problem. Any ideas?

This always happens in communal areas - in flats, at the tea making place at work, in public loos etc. People who are perfectly prim and proper in their own home suddenly develop a "tidy blindness" and pretend they didn't realise.
The only solution is somehow to get them to take ownership. Pehaps a rota for cleaning the area by the residents themselves.

If you employ a paid cleaner it will get worse and its not the cleaner's fault.

Ask for the subject to be put on the Agenda at your annual general meeting and make sure you and any like minded owners attend. You AND any of the owners who don`t want rules can then have their say.
After discussion you can resolve what the majority wish to do (if anything) and what sanctions can be used for transgression. The administrators will advise the president and the meeting about possibilities.
I`m not sure that there aren`t safety laws about swimming pools any way.

        upkeep of communal areas

        Hi Stacey
Which Urbanisation in PF are you in? There's a guy who lives by the pool in ours in PF who won't even let you lay down a towel at the poolside without checking with him first, do you want me to send him round to yours??

Very annoying for you I am sure. This year our pool has been closed for repair work. Maybe it is just luck but when it is open the rules are scrupulously recognised with no real supervision except by the families using it. The majority are Spanish and quite honestly they are a revelation, yes the kids make a lot of noise and tear around but it is just natural high spirits and anyway all kids are noisy. But at Siesta Time, the pool closes from 1500 to 1730, everyone gets out and silence descends. Nobody orders people to get out they just do.
