  • Do British baby monitors work in Spain??

Hi! I bought a Tomy Walkabout Classic baby monitor in the UK, assuming it would work in Norway ... but it didn't. I imagine this is because of different frequencies.
However, I wondered if any of you have taken monitors over from the UK and used them successfully in Spain?

    Regards
    Helen

Hi, we used a Tomy walkabout in Menorca a couple of years ago no problems. we used the adapted plug and just played about with the frequencies until we found the best. If yours is the type where you can put batteries in the transmitter end (baby end) as well as the receiver (parent end) you should have no problems

      Baby monitors

Baby monitors will work in any country regardless of origin, its simply a transmitter and receiver, you may have inadvertantly had the Transmitter on one channel and the receiver on the other, they normally have two channels in case of interference from other montors, the only other reason for not working would be some sort of local RF interference which is overloading the front end of the receiver part of the monitor, most monitors operate around 49mhz on FM, very low output power, but you would be surprised at how far low power goes and that some people dont realise that everything they say in the vicinity of the monitor is effectively being transmitted in clear, Hmmm, thats for another thread

        Thanks for your replies.
Hmm, maybe it's something to do with the wiring in our house here in Norway then. We have a mixture of 1960s (pre-fire!) and 1980s electricals (i.e. very dodgy) and our monitor doesn't work on any channel combination.

(Our UK video player doesn't work here either - we see the picture, but get no sound, so perhaps Norway is different???)

          Norway

          Hi Helen

as far as the baby monitor, as long as it was powered sufficiently then there should be no issue, unless excessive mains hum caused aproblem, Im not sure what the voltage is in norway, but if other UK appliances work then it must be close to 220/240, if its 110 then you may have a problem, as for the Video, thats easy, UK Videos/TVs are PAL I, and Norway is PAL B/G, which means the audio Carrier is different, hence you see picture but no sound, you can have your video adjusted by an engineer to get it to work in Norway, but since they are cheap as chips these days probably best to buy one locally, this is a common problem with people moving from the UK, as PAL I is the least common of the PAL formats, no surprise there then

            You certainly know your stuff!
Sounds like it might be the mains hum then. There was slightly less disturbance with batteries, but still too much to make sense of the noise. Norway is 220V as far as I know.
