  • Paint Information - Please Help!

    Hi

I am about to re-vamp some wooden wardrobe doors by painting them white. Can anyone recommend some decent satin effect gloss paint? I bought some the other day which is so thin that it does not cover over the primer I have used. Ideally I am looking for something that will only require one coat as I do not have alot of time to get this finished.

    Any help is much appreciated.

You should not be putting gloss on top of primer. Primer is also for bare wood. It should be undercoated and then an oil-based satin finish or eggshell on top. You can also buy water based (i.e. acyrilic) satin or eggshell.

If your wardrobes are varnished, acrylic paint will not stick to it. You would need to sand them down and apply oil based satin finish.

If they are not varnished and they are bare wood, one thin coat of watered down emulsion or primer and then your white acrylic paint on top. One coat paint is self-undercoating and I think it's usually gloss only. It's rubbish. I have been a painter and decorater for 30 years and would not use it.

      Hi GillyS

Thanks for your reply. I did actually use an undercoat first and did not mean primer! The doors had been varnished about 17 years ago and so I removed that first and then used a white undercoat.

Can you recommend a particular brand that I could try - something that is not thin or watery.

Your help with this is much appreciated - I think I will scream if I have to start all over again!!!

Has you have already undercoated the doors, the only option is put a satin finish on top. Dulux is the best make if it's available in Spain. Look in the DIY places, Ardys, Brico House, AKI etc. or if you put a post on asking if anyone knows where Dulux is sold.

When you got the varnish off, spray primer would have been better as it sticks better to doors that were previously varnished than undercoat. If there is any varnish left at all even the slightest bit and the door gets knocked, the paint you put on will chip off even after its got the top coat on.
