  • who can ??

    Just a couple of questions.

1 who can apply for a NIE number ?
2 who can register with the local council ?
3 and what benefits do they offer ?

and no paying taxes is not considered a benefit

The reason I ask is that if I register at Formentera town hall I can use the village pools free of charge. Can my sons also register ??

    Thanks for any replies

An NIE number is similar to a National Insurance number in the UK. If you want to earn legally, be employed legally, buy / own property, pay taxes, buy a car etc you will need an NIE number. There are no benefits per se, it is simply a means by which the authorities can identify you.

If you want to register with your local council you will need to sign on the empadronamiento, which is similafr to the electoral role in the UK. For each person on the empadronamiento the local council receives funding from central office for education, policing, hospitals, roadworks etc. To sign on you will need a copy of your escritura/rental agreement, a copy of a utility bill in your name, and a copy of your passport (plus all originals). You should be able to do this at your local town hall.

Benefits of being on the empadronamiento (padron) vary according to the local authority. E.g. in Torrevieja you get a free bus pass. best to ask in the town hall.

        empadronment

You are suppose to spend at least 6 months of the year in Torrevieja to be able to be registered on the padron. Once you get it you can get a free bus pass. If you go the the Tourist Info Centre next to the square they will give you advise. I spoke to Graham Knight there and he had a printed sheet about NIE numbers and the padron. Very useful

No you don't need to live in Spain to be on the padron. Just own or rent a property in the area you register, and to my knowledge yes your whole family is able to be on it. The local council obtains finance from the central government for every person on it if you are registered. This is supposed to benefit the locals!
