  • Strange smell!

    Hi
I've just been out to my property in Spain and found that there was a bad smell coming from the trap in the kitchen. I've tried all sorts of things to get rid of it - it would disappear for a while and then return.
Anyone else experienced this? And if so, how do you get rid of it completely?
    Please help!

sometimes the trap can dry out & you can get odours coming back through the system, some of the local drainage can be a bit iffy ! Do you have anyone going in when you are not there & running the taps, flush the toilets etc ?

We have had this problem we just pour some disinfectant down the waste pipes and leave for a bit before rinsing water down the smell soon goes away but this needs to be done regularly it is not a quick fix if you need someone to pop in and check on yours while you are not here i coulddo it if you are local just get in touch

We had the same problem and we don't have anyone checking on our place.

Someone advised us to put Domestos not any cheap version of bleach down all of the toilets and sink and wash hand basin prior to leaving to come back to the UK and lo and behold we have never suffered any problem ssince and that's just over a year we ahve been doing it Summer and Winter time.

Putting bleach down is a good idea if you are on mains sewers, if you use a cess pit then bleach shouldn't be used as it kills all the natural bacteria that breaks down the cess pit contents

You could fit a "U" bend in the main sewer pipe (as it is done in the UK) or you can also buy a device that is retro fitted that acts in the same manner as a "U" bend (except it cost a lot more).

You may notice bad odours more frequently during windy conditions, not not that type of wind but the type that blows outside lol.

            Re: Strange Smell!

Thanks for all of your responses - I am relieved to find out that we are not the only ones!!

I'll try the bleach option and get someone in to flush the loos and run taps when we are not there for extended periods.

As ever, this forum has been really helpful.
