  • trouble in torrevieja

myself and my wife have recently visited torrevieja with a view to a permanant move and after our visit we was sold to the area we loved the town, beaches and the people. we now have our property in the uk on the market with several interested parties, BUT we have just returned home after a family holiday in cala finestrat and several people there (spanish and english) have told us we should reconsider as there has been a lot of trouble in torrevieja lately especially against english living there. can anyone confirm or hopefully deny this or if it is true what has the trouble been

    Re: trouble in torrevieja

    Hi

I would recommend anyone moving down to this area, if you are wanting to live permanently in Spain I would not recommend staying in Torrevieja Town but the urbanisations and other areas surrounding are perfectly fine.
I lived in San luis for a few years and had absolutely no problems what so ever. Im now in Almoradi.

I have never heard of such trouble against the english people. all i have heard on which I agree with is that when the british move down here and refuse to attempt to speak Spanish and expect the Spanish to speak English is disgraceful. Spanish can be very resentful for this but very pleased and happy to help if you are at least trying to speak Spanish with them.

I would ignore what people are saying as 1 bad story is told and is spread like wildfire. Everyone likes a horror story not a nice one.

Good luck and go for it.

I agree with maggidog. My wife and I took the decision to move over here and have never regretted it. Like thousands of expats we live on an Urbanisation, we would love to live in a Spanish village and once we get better with our Spanish language we may just do that.
Regarding the Spanish not liking us, we have Spanish friends who hate people from Madrid more than the Brits, but I have to say there are a few Brits I dont like especially in July when the holidaymakers arrive, I sometmes feel embarassed to be British!!
The only thing we miss are our friends. I dont think we would ever return to live in the UK.
If you want to come and live here, rent somewhere for 6 months,- a lot of owners are doing long lets- then if you dont like it you can go somewhere else, but I dont doubt for one minute you will!!
Come and live La Vida Loca. and remember for every bad story you hear, there are a hundred good ones!

We have a place at Punta Prima (Serena 1V) lovely area very quiet but near to shops and bars and only a 8 minute walk to beach. It is a 10 min approx drive into Torrievieja. We love it here i am sure you would

            moving toTorre

There is nothing essentially wrong with torre.but like all the costas it does get very busy in high season and it has its fair share of crime /problems with eastern european migrants/ travellers. We thought it was fantastic back in 1998/9 and we had a nice townhouse until late 2004. BUT THERE ARE BETTER PLACES.

Have you considered the towns behind the Algarve, eg Loule or Silves. Both lovely towns growing in popularity. Much cheaper than Torre for hotels, eating out etc. Cheap flights to Faro. Very little crime. English widely spoken. if you must buy in Spain why not consider Ayamonte on the costa del la luz for all the same reasons. There are currently fewer english which I find refreshing. I think the climate is better - some breeze usually to temperate the high temps in summer & easily as reiable in winter. Loads of places to vist like tavira or Monte Gordo or Isla Canela.

I suggest you take lots of holidays to try out places before you purchase. The purchase costs come to roughly 10% over the purchase price and the selling costs aren't cheap. A mistake can be costly and the costa Blanca is fully priced right now despite thousands of places for sale.

Liz (sorry for digressing but "PM has been disabled on this board")

We also have a place on Serena IV, can you please give any info on the building work opposite please?

last over in Nov & a big hole had been dug & filled with concrete on one side of the new road but we're more interested in what's happening on the other i.e the cement works side?

                Many thanks
