I have bought a property in Cabo Roig and will be spending about 4 months of the year there. Rather then rent a car every time I am thinking of bringing my right hand drive 1998 mercedes over and registering it on Spanish plates. Does anybody know how you go about doing this and how much will it will cost. I have heard you also have to get the headlamps changed.

One other thing to bear in mind when considering this move is that once your car is ten years old you will not be able to get fully-comprehensive insurance on it - unless things change in the very near future. If anyone else reading this has found an insurance policy that will do this, could they please advise. Thanks.

The headlights will have to be changed to left hand drive and also if you only have one reversing light and one fog light on the rear of the car they will have to be changed around, but i expect a merecedes will have two of each. I have just changed a 1993 Rover over on to spanish plates, which cost 545.00 euro plus the spanish road tax plus import duty. Also if you have a tow bar fitted it will need to come off if it has not got a european e number on it.
As for the remarks from R2D2 about you can only get 3rd party insurance is not true, our Rover is just coming up to 14 years old now and has fully comprehensive insurance on it from knights insurance. If the car was insured before it was ten years old with the same insurance company, when it get to the plus ten year mark the comprehensive insurance will carry on, if you change companies it will than go down to 3rd party only insurance.

Thanks for the replys. I will make some enquirys about insurance etc. It seems like a lot of messing to register the car. might be better selling the car in England and putiiing the proceeds towards another merc. does anybody know of a second hand car dealer in the torrrevieja area who sells clean Mercs.

car registration
we are moving permanently to Spain next year, bringing our english registered car. we will change over to spanish registration. we have been planning to get a tow bar fitted beforehand. should english garages be familiar with the european e number referred to by cbp.

Re: car registration
Yes all new tow bars that come from well know manufacturers will have a 'e' number stamped onto them somewhere.Originalmente publicado por Paulcwe are moving permanently to Spain next year, bringing our english registered car. we will change over to spanish registration. we have been planning to get a tow bar fitted beforehand. should english garages be familiar with the european e number referred to by cbp.
