        Residency

Hi, All I can say is "good luck!!!" I got mine this year and it was a right suicide mission! No really!!!! First you need to get N.I.E (the office is in Alicante but I have been told since that for Residency this has changed to Orihuela Costa - not sure if its the same for N.I.E.) Then you have to get on the padron for your area (this requires N.I.E.) and proof of where you are living (eg. copy of house deeds, renting contract, utility bill) and passport and a copy. You dont need photos anymore because they phased out the Residency cards at the end of January this year. You also need a completed form which you can obtain from the office when you arrive. You will need this form for both N.I.E and Residencia. To obtain N.I.E. you need your form, 2 photos, passport, 2 copies of passport, copy of the completed form. Take them all to the office where you have to queue up from 7am (only about 150 people allowed through each day so have to get there early!!!) You will queue for about 2.5 - 3 hours. After you have your n.i.e. then you can apply for all the rest... Seriously, obtaining residencia is ten fold worse! and if you dont speak Spanish you will have a right problem. I went back to Alicante City 5 times before I finally got mine. I was told to go to one office, queued there for 2 hours, took ticket and told to go back 2 hours later.... nothing to do there as in the middle of nowhere! Drank 7 cups of coffee and went back. Told to queue one side, queued and got to the front and then told i was in the wrong queue. Had to re-queue for another 1.5 hours. Got paper to say to go to another office the next day. Went the next day and was told all numbers had been issued and to go back next afternoon. Went back next afternoon and was told not possible and to go back the following morning!!! Went back the next morning and queued for 3 hours outside. Finally got Residencia - not amused! If I had known beforehand I would have paid a solicitor to get them both for me and for 75 euros each I would advise you to do the same. I speak Spanish but it was even a nightmare for me. I would suggest find an English speaking solicitor and get them to do the whole lot for you. You just take in your documents and leave them to it. Good luck (your going to need it!!!)

Well after reading your account I was exhausted! Guess what route I'll be taking...........
Thanks for taking the time to write that epistle.
My next questionis about internet access. We will be renting , no landline but will need broadband ASAP. What to do?

I'm afraid that you can't just pay a Solicitor to do everything for you.
The person at the NIE number issuing office needs to see you in person with your application.
You can, however, pay someone to go early and get a place in the queue and then you just go about 8.45am to take over the place in the queue for the office opening at 9am.

                Hi again,
I've just looked into the OARI Guide on the left of the homepage screen.
I think it will have all the info you need.

                  Wills

Does anyone know the average cost of getting a Spanish Will made?

                  Is this correct?
Apparently if you don't have a spanish will your property will not be passed to your children.

Also if you have mention of your spanish property in your english Will, it voids the spanish one.

I really dont understand what everyone is going on about getting your NIE number couldnt be easier you just go to the police station at Torrevieja get the form and fill it in (literally name and address) easily readable even in Spanish or get a phrase book. Take your passport plus copy, utility bill plus copy and 2 photos hand that in and then go back 2 weeks later and thats it. As for the residency certificate that is all done at the Orihuela police station now but for that you must go to the townhall and sign on at the padron all you need for that is your passport and copies etc minus photos.oh and your rental agreement to prove where you live or escritura if you own a house here. You should get your NIE as soon as you can as you need that number for literally everything here.

A Spanish Will can be done for approx 300 euros per couple you will see adverts for it in the local papers. And the reverse is true, if you dont have a Spanish Will your estate will be divided between your Children and not necessarily your Spouse. But if you have an English Will stating your assets in Spain then I believe that overrides Spanish Law, but as the law changes here every few months its best to get up to date information from a Lawyer.

Please be aware when refering to the OARI guide on the left handside of this page that the information on there can be out of date as with the Residencia it is not a card anymore but a big certificate and you apply for it differently

A Spanish lawyer who lives in Edinburgh told me a while ago that if you don't have a Will for your Spanish property; when you die, the State automatically takes it and your children have to fight for it through the Courts. If this info is out of date (because the situation has changed or whatever) then I apologise but, as we all know (or should) the simplest thing can take years to sort out under Spanish law - and cost you a fortune in Lawyers' fees - I believe this is a point which is definitely worth checking out thoroughly!
