  • Living costs in Spain

    Hi,
I'm after a bit of advice or probably more encouragement.
Me and hubby are planning the move from London to Spain next year. He's taking early retirement and is totally fed up of living in London and he doesn't want to spend his retirement in the UK. I have reluctantly agreed to move too. I was going to stay in London, we worked out the logistics but neither of us want to live apart.
I have many concerns, but the main one being money. I have a good job here in the City and the thought of giving up that money, to live off his pension really bothers me, as I'm not convinced we'll have enough to live well.
So my question to you is.
How much does one need to live comfortably. I don't mean eating out all the time, we'll probably only do that once or twice a week. But how much will we need for normal everyday life. Bills, food and stuff ? When I think about water, electric, phone, internet, car, food, pension, ect. I'm not convinced we'll have much to play with.
I don't really want to work, unless I can find a comfy little part time office work, I can't imagine that happening as my Spanish isn't great. (shall work on that as soon as we move).
    Any advice would be welcoming.

      living costs

      Hi Julskin,
Obviously there are many variables depending on your lifestyle, do you smoke, drink a lot etc. We are early retired and have been here nearly 4 years and find that we can live comfortably on 350 euros a week, no mortgage of course.

Some friends of mine moved out here nearly 3 years ago, both well under retirement age with young children. He still has his job in London. He works for a week doing extra hours then spends a week over here. He books his flights well in advance and they find it's cheaper to do it this way than to live in London. Maybe you could do it that way. Best thing to do is speak to your employer.
