  • Re-registering a UK car in Spain

Owing to the restriction put onto UK insurance policies that only allow limited use of one's car in Spain, I am considering re-registering my car on Spanish plates.
    Has anyone successfully accomplished this?
If so who have you insured the newly registered car with? I have read of people encountering problems with the insurance of RHD cars!
Also, if one stays longer than the period covered by "The Green Card" is the car still insured third party in Spain?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Re registering

This is quite a complex subject. The Green card only covers you as long as it is valid. There has ben a recent change in UK insurances in that the the third party cover that was always available for any other car, is now no longer available unless a premium has been paid. You need to look at the small print of the last communication sent to you by your insurance company. So in a nutshell, no - your car won't have any insurance cover in Spain once the green card has expired.
As far as re-registering, the Spanish road authorities don't like RHD cars ( after all they are not designed to be habitually driven on LHD roads). The changes that they will require to be made - new light fittings, mirrors etc often make it uneconomic to attempt to re register. Far better to sell your car in the UK (it will have little resale value in Spain) and by a LHD from the beginning.

Thanks for you reply. We know it is a complicated issue. We cannot move over to Spain permanently yet, but we may be able to come over for 12 months and rent our house in the UK, which is why we do not want to sell our RHD car yet. Thanks again

Why don't you insure your car here in Spain? Knights Insurance in Calle Apolo, Torrevieja will insure right hand drive cars on UK plates without any problem.

You don't need a green card if you have Saga Insurance.
It covers you for all EC countries and some others as well.

Don't forget that if your MOT runs out then the Insurance companies will claim that the insurance is invalid - and won't necessarily pay out if required.
