Seeing as people helped me, I thought only right to return the favour by reporting back on my experiences.
Tues 15 February 2005
Travelled to Alicante arriving at 6.10am
Officer situated on industrial estate in middle of nowhere by a motorway
Parked across the road and left kids in car where we couls see them (warm)
Two queues - made sure I joined NIE one.
Freezing cold, thank goodness I took flask & toast!
40-50th in queue
8.20am office workers arrived closely followed by police
Police ensured no pushing in
Wife brings kids over to join queue
Given number 41 outside and then enter building at 8.50am
Join another queue indoors
Number 41 flashes on screen at 9.30am
Go in to office to do paperwork
Out in less than minute, told to come back at 11.00am
Sit in car outside and go back in at 10.35am
Name finally called out at 12.05am
Given sheet of paper with NIE on and leave very relieved
Complete purchase two days later
