  • Medication Availability - Someone please help me............

    Hi guys

This is my second post regarding this matter - I really wantto get away from the UK, but desperately need to know if my medication (or something very similar) is available in Spain, particularly in Torrevieja as that is where I would like to head to.....

The drug I take at the moment is Stemetil (Prochlorperazine Maleate). The dosage is 5mg three times a day. In the US, it is known as Compazine. It is possible that there is a similar drug prescribed in Spain as an alternative.......

The reason I need the drug is that I have a balance disorder, giving symptoms of vertigo, i.e. dizziness, nausea. The medication counters these effects and enables me to lead a fairly normal life. Without it, I would not even be able to get out of bed.

As suggested previously, it would be ideal for me to have a holiday in Torrevieja and visit a pharmacy to find out for myself. This is not really practical as I cannot fly, so it would be a long drive. Ideally, I only want to do this drive once, i.e. when I relocate to Spain.

Therefore, I am pleading with all people that live in Spain and visit this message board to visit the pharmacy to try and find out for me. One guy did so for me previously, but I had not given him all the information needed. I need to know also if it would be available on prescription, if not how much it costs. Please help me - I am desperate to get away from this dreary country and spend some happy years in Spain - I just need a helping hand with regards to this information..............

    Thanks

    Simon

I typed - farmacia+Spain into Google and selected the first website - Portal de Farmacia.

    www.portalfarma.com

I then entered the English translation on that site and went onto - Contact us.

    The email address is buzon@redfarma.org

I have sent them an email asking about the availablity of Stemetil (Prochlorperazine Maleate) and if/when they get back to me, I shall pass any information onto you.

I don't envisage any problems with your drug, Spain is very much at the forefront when it comes to medication, but as I say, I will pass on any information as soon as it arrives.

      medication

      Hi,

I think that your concerns are uncecessary as Stemetil is a very common medication used widely for nausea, meniere's disease etc which is also balance affecting disorder.

Your best bet if you are still in doubt would be to approach your GP and ask for his advice regarding it's supply abroad.

You also might find that the drug is produced using it's generic name as drugs are produced under their proprietary name and generic name.

Thanks for the two replies that have been posted. Must say I am a little disappointed with the general lack of responses.

The first thing I did was ask my GP about it, and just got told that I would probably be able to get it there - not the definite answer I was looking for.

As mentioned in both my posts to this forum, I just thought that as many people on here actually live in Torrevieja/Spain it would not be hard to spend five minutes asking the question in a pharmacy.

I will just have to keep trying to find out from somewhere, or just forget about going to Spain.

Please dont change your mind about coming to Spain, let me know when you are coming and we'll get your beds made and have your tea ready.

            medication

            Hi,

You sound annoyed about the response that you have had regarding your post sometimes it takes a while for people maybe to get the chance to try and find out an answer for someone don't be too hasty to think bad of forum members.

I myself don't live in Torre but Gran Alacant and am due to go over next month for a three week spell during which time I would probably have tried to get and exact answer for you regarding your query. It's not that people don't want to try and offer help but that they can't do it right away.

Being a qualified nurse who once worked in ENT clinics we used Stemetil for Menieres disease and nausea post-operatively it really is a very common widely used not just in this country.

Try to be patient someone will come up with an answer for you!!

            Regards,

            Katrina

Apologies for sounding annoyed - as I said, I just felt disappointed. I have been trying to find an answer to this question for weeks now. I have sent countless enquiring emails, posted on forums, all to no avail so far.

I am sorry for losing my patience, but I have a really miserable life here, and although the grass isn't neccessarily greener outside the UK, I just wanted to give it a try and maybe find a bit of happiness. Spain seemed like the ideal place, hence my desperation to get a definite answer.

I have checked with pharmacies here, and according to the book they had, Stemetil is not available in Spain. This is why I am investigating it so thoroughly, as I can't just hope that it might be available as I depend on this drug in order to lead a vaguely normal life.

I would be most grateful if anybody can produce a definite answer, preferably the sooner the better. I know it is a little impatient of me, but I am desperate to change things as soon as possible.....

Okay, okay - so tomorrow I go to the Farmacia and ask the question for you.

Sorry you feel that we aren't doing enough for you.

                  availability of medication

You can buy stemetil on-line, it seems to have different names, I found this using a search engine by putting 'stemetil availability in Spain'

                  http://www.prescription-europe.com/Stemetil.htm

Thanks for the info - looks like I will have to rethink things...Again, I am sorry that I appear to have offended people, that was not my intention.

                          medication availability

                          To continue
regarding medication, I couldnt help noticing that side effects of stemetil is some sensitivity to sun and UV light, maybe thats why they dont have it in Spain.
I have good neighbours who are resident in Spain and they cannot speak more highly about the medical care they have received out there, I know that one of them a diabetic couldnt have the insulin she'd ben prescribed in UK and she was very carefully monitored while a change was made. Also they introduced another medication which really should have been thought of whilst she was in Uk I speak with a little authority as a trained nurse.
Another lady had her whole medication revamped and she has improved greatly.
So please dont be put off I would be very happy to be treated in Spain and will be confident when we retire over there eventually

                            Simon,

I hope that you find a solution to your medication problem.

I am a translator for pharmacutical research and we often contact the drug suppliers at the address which you can find on the small leaflet which is in with your tablets.

In this way we are able to contact the people who make the actual medication to find out which countries sell their drug and what name they sell them under in the various countries.

It is not usual to find the drug sold under the same name in different countries.

                            :P Magenta

                              Hi illumin 184

Whereabouts in the UK do you live? Maybe the answer is for someone to bring back some Dogmatil for you to try.

                              Regards
