  • Car re-registration

We have just arrived and would like to re-register our car to Spanish plates, we have not yet applied for residency, would this be necessary or would applying for the Padron suffice?
Also could anyone recommend a reliable company fairly local to La Zenia to assist us in this as i understand it can be quite complicated. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

I looked into this sometime ago and it is really difficult.

My brother in law has just re-registered a car and the amount of paper work is horrendous.

There are people who specialise in this service and you will them in the free local papers or Costa Blanca news.

I think you very definitely need an NIE before even starting

i also think that even though the car is coming from within the EU you will have to pay some import duty.

I think from previous postings on this subject most people dont bother and just buy a spanish car.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

It isnt that complicated actually. You need a NIE number. You cant own a car in Spain without one.
As andy suggested there is import duty involved. How much would depend on the tax value of the car. I think that you are pretty safe to go into any GESTORIA and they will sort it out. if its a really old car though, it might not be worth it.

Suggest you use the specialist companies advertising in the local paper. Better still getrid of it and buy Spanish safer and cheaper.

            Car registration

I had a comparatively new car in the UK and thought seriously about bringing it over. What with the import tax, the new ( very expensive ) headlights, the paperwork and then still ending up with a steering wheel on the wrong side...I gave up and decided to buy here. best thing I ever did !!

It was a piece of cake.
Cost us 1,100 Euros and took only a few weeks. We paid no import duty as the car hadn't been here for more than 60 days.
We used a company advertised in the local paper re-plate mate and they were extremley helpful and efficient.

Far cheaper than buying another car.

I'm surprised this subject is even discussed on here. One poster was screamed off the forum a few weeks ago by ex pat forum fascists for even suggesting that one need to re register a car here and that the GB plated cars were above any law in Spain and could be driven with impunity! Tell that to the man in the GB 'S' reg Vauxhall the Civil Guard were pulling apart on Cabo Roig roundabout the other day ! Mind you, the nasty posters seem to have disappeared now. Possibly committed suicide following severe post traumatic non TV disorder !

                  Car Reg

I am bringing my car over tomorow. I think the sensible thing to do is to sell it and buy a Spanish car. The problem is I like the car I am bringing over, it is an oldish Merc and will last for ever in the Spanish climate. If I was not bringing the car over I would just hire cars. If you are spending about for months a year in Spain. Hiring is cheaper.

In the Costa Blanca News there is a letter from a Quesada resident saying he is being picked on constantly by the Guardia for driving a GB plated car. Why is he so surprised I ask ?

We didn't want to buy another car as there is nothing wrong with the one we have. Plus we're not sure if we are going to stay here permanently so don't want the trouble of having to sell it again and buy back in the UK. Seems like a waste of money.
