I've been looking at the different contracts available for mobile phones and think i have found a good deal i.e. 2 phones, free calls 24/7 between the 2 phones and cheap calls to the UK. But a friend of mine says that i need to give a NIE when senting up the contract as any contract setup without this would be switched off, as anyone heard about this as i don't want to go into a 18 month contract to have it switched off. The company said they just needed my passport,bank details

Perhaps your friend was referring to this article in the Coast Rider this week, it only applies to "Pay as you go".

If you own a pay as you go or prepaid Spanish mobile phone you could lose your mobile number and have to re-register your phone again. In an attempt to prevent terrorists and criminals using anonymous prepaid mobile phones for communication, the Spanish government has issued a decree that any un-registered phones will be disconnected on the 1st of October.
To comply with the new registration law, pay as you go users have to verify their present address through a recent copy of the padron and a copy of their passport. If you presented both those documents at the time of purchasing your prepaid phone as most people will have done, then no further action is required. However a number of mobile phone users may have just bought a SIM card to put into an unlocked handset. Until recently it was not necessary to provide proof of address for prepaid SIM cards. Any phone number that is not correctly registered on the 1st of October will be switched of. It is believed that a grace period will exist before the telephone numbers are recycled. This is likely to effect residents that are currently out of the country and will not be returning until winter.
The move has sparked debate as to the merits of such a scheme. The idea for a register of mobile phones in Ireland was extensively reviewed by officials in the respective department. There were many complex legal, technical, data protection and practical issues to be considered. In theory, a register of mobile phones might seem like a good idea. However, once they looked at the situation in other administrations, considered the ease with which an unregistered foreign or stolen SIM card can be used and having consulted with the Office of the Attorney General and other interested parties, it was concluded that the proposal would be of limited benefit, in that it would not solve the illegal and inappropriate use of prepaid mobile phones and was not practical. One can only assume that similar issues would exist in Spain.

I have an Orange pay as you go mobile.

I paid for it by cash.

In June I received a text from Orange saying that I had to register my details by NOVEMBER 2009.

Now, Orange may have made a mistake in the text, (but I still have it on my mobile), so why is everyone saying we have to register by October this year?

We bought our pay as you go phones at Milar Punta Marina CC in April and they were registered there and then, by the girl we bought it from , only our passport numbers were used as at that stage completed the Residencia & padron process it was registered at this address

First time I got a contract phone. Vodafone asked me for my residencia (not my NIE number) when I changed to Movistar and Orange they only asked for ID. I think you need to be residnt in order to have a contract. But that would be up to the operator in any case.

Hi Pleeky, can you tell me which provider was offering you the 2 phones to talk to each other 24\7 for free please. I am using vodafone and they charge me for this.

Just to recap that tariff for you. This means all calls after 10pm and until 8am, weekends and national holidays and for 5 consecutive hours each day of your choice so for example from 5pm til 10pm are all at a cost of 7cents per minute. All other calls at other times are 30c per min. Then you pay €5 each month as an add on and will get all calls to each other free 24/7, can call the access number free of charge which brings down the cost of UK landline calls to 5c per min and UK mobile to 23c per minute.

This is an excellent tariff and is the one that me and my partner are on as we work in the day but can still call each other for free and when we finish our calls to other people are free too. Then we can call the UK for cheap 24/7 too.

I spoke to Sales at Telitec only last week and their contract tariffs are good though not for everyone.
The way I saw it was as long as you can see that it is not quite as simple as it first seems in the advert, you do need the add ons to get the real bargains
Consequently I am still looking for a cheaper option than I already have will post any findings

From pay as you go to contract

Just a tip: I changed my pay as you go to a Contract and got a brand new Nokia N95 8GB for free. I think bought Movistar and Vodafone (possible more of them) have this deal.

I just gave them my NIE number, sim-card number (the long number printed on the sim-card), my address and they sorted everything out on the phone for me. I think these offers are open to everyone who has had pay as you go for more than 6 months.

For me coverage and stability is more important than the price (I call for about 100 euro a month), so I went with Movistar.
