I think you are quite right that they are the resposability of the hire company, but if you make sure that they are in the car to start with and you get stopped by the Gaurdia you may avoid any hassle with them as they may just feel like giving you some grief (we all know that they can). If the car is impounded and lets say you are 100K from home do you want the problems of sorting out cars with the hire company or arranging how to get back.

1/ Warning triangle
2/ Two high visibility jackets
3/ Spare bulb set

Anyone know what the legal requirement is ? Fire extinguisher, torch etc etc ?

you need:

2 triangles.
1 vest.
1 spare bulb set.
spare tire and tools to change it (or another system if you have that.)

The vest is so that you can walk on the road. If you only have 1 vest then only 1 person (presumably the driver) can leave the car to change bulbs, tires etc etc.

On a sidenote. I think the bulbs is bullshit. Have anyone of you tried to change a bulb on most modern cars. Its a complete nightmare, Took me ages on my car and I was at home during the day. Only needed a longer arm, a smaller hand and 2 more elbows. I would hate to do the same operation at night on the side of the road. Mission impossible

Makes me laugh though, The 2 triangles thingie was implemented just a few years ago. and drives in Spain doesnt seem to understand that you need 2 triangles so you can put one in EACH direcction. Instead you see one triangle after x metres(supposedly 50) behind the car, and 2 metres behind the first one, you see the other one.
Whu do people do this? is it because if you fail to notice the first one, you should get a second chance of seeing the other one?

If you've broken your glasses and haven't got a spare pair, you won't see anything! I've got so much that's required in my car I can't fit the shopping in.

Before we moved here permanently I used DieselCars.com from what I remember you pay on collection it was cheap and efficient no fancy offices they have a "butty type wagon" on the top level of Alicante Airport and if there is noone there when you return you simply post the keys and the carpark ticket into a cutout box on the van

I merely came on here to ask for assistance based on people's experiences. I've never been to Alicante airport nor Torrevieja so I was hoping to take advantage of this forums local knowledge.

Have a little search on Google yourself, all you get is agents etc, and none of the websites you come across mention anything about payment methods.

I hope I don't get lost when I'm in Torrevieja and have to ask you for directions

I have been told that you have to carry a spare pair of spectacles, if you wear them.

Yes you do have to carry a spare pair, god knows why cant remember the last time I broke a pair of glasses whilst driving

in the past i,ve always had to use the card ,i took in euros, but they said they did not keep any cash in case of robberies also if you do a runner or damage the car they,ve got your card no.
