Clean up the Costa - Part 2- People's Litter Pick-up

Signs for Extra Help



To help the registered volunteers after they have completed a 'People's Litter Pick-up' we are now able to provide signs (as shown in the photograph) that can be placed in the ground on the area that has been cleaned. There is an alternative option of signs that can be attached to fences or walls.

To receive the signs register with the campaign and tell us when and where the clean-up will be. These are in addition to the Free starter kits of hats, badges, stickers and initial supply of refuse bags. Those who have already completed and notified the campaign of their successful Litter Pick-up will receive the signs in the next few days.

Campaign promoted on Canal Vega Baja TV.

Today Ulla Perret and Elliot Sampford , members of the campaign coordinating team were invited quests on the new daily news and current affairs programme 'Life', transmitted on Canal Vega Baja television daily from 12.00 to 1.00 pm and which is aimed at English speaking viewers.

In addition to discussing various news items the opportunity was given to outline details of the Clean up the Costa campaign with particular emphasis to the Grand Clean-up to be held at 10.00 am on Thursday 16th October 2008, in Calle Niagara, Orihuela Costa.

We are hoping that the television company will follow up on the publicity today with a visit on the morning of the event. The more publicity that the campaign gets, the more volunteers will help, with the result of a cleaner Orihuela Costa.

140 Bags of Rubbish from Calle Niagara

Today (16th October 200 we had the first of the Grand Clean-ups in Orihuela Costa and what a fantastic response from the Residents of the Coast. These clean-ups are in addition to those carried out by local groups in their own area.

In excess of 70 people gave their time to help clean-up a large part of Calle Niagara with the result that approximately 140 bags of litter in total, were collected, from three locations in the road. Second Grand Clean-up - 12th November

We have already been asked by many people when the next Grand Clean-up will take place. It is to be Wednesday the 12th November 2008 and will start at 10.00 am. If you support the work that the Clean up the Costa campaign is doing I would ask you to delete your post on this thread as the reputation you are acquiring on this site and the other in Torrevieja is not a benefit to the campaign.

You have already posted details of your album on your other threads so there is no need to put it on here.

I take it you are the one and same man who says:

The area has become a concrete jungle interspersed with builders landfill sites!

Any prospective purchasers of property in the area beware, and especially those who buy off plan. The developement may be illegal, may not ever be completed correctly and may not have the correct legal documentation. The Estate Agents selling the off plan properties will not tell you this.'

You are a politician so obviously the truth hurts you as well. My family and I agree with KC1 and he has published photographs which prove what he says. Why the hell should taxpayers have to pick up anyway - what are the Town Hall doing ? They have made a fortune out of us in various taxes. Where the hell has it all gone ? Ask that of your bent Councillor. Greens, more like yellows ! No wonder Pokroppa openly takes the mickey out of you.

Up early today. One of the London tabloids wants to know more about my photographs and is ringing this AM.

No, I don't believe I will remove my posting particularly reading what has been posted above. I hadn't noticed who had made the comments on another forum but interesting indeed.

Please confirm that you are the same 'Ellsam' which made them.

My photographs will increase in number and reflect the area.

'People's Litter Pick Up' sounds very New Labour. And yes, just what are the taxes being spent on and why should taxpayers have to pick up rubbish which is the role of the local authority?

Friendly - where ? I have never used any form of abuse ever nor have I thrown insults. I merely take the photographs and now have one London press man interested. Yes Koali has used bad language, no worse than I hear everyday though and have read elsewhere on this forum. The photographs and their circulation will continue - and this forum is but one little place where they are to be made available.

A few questions here for you to address Elliot Sampford aka. Ellsam.

Tell us all if you did try to run this area down on other forums as suggested and that what Los Verdes is up to is political gamesmanship despite holding yourself up as guardians of decency in the face of those 'evil PP people' ?

Or is the Green Party really doling out little hats and bags out of the goodness of their hearts rather than using daft ex-pats to do what the Municipal authorities are paid to do in a point scoring exercise, denying Spanish workers their right to earn a living?

If I may be so bold, I don't think this is a particularly fair attack on Ellsam, whom I know personally, as well as other coastal representatives of Los Verdes. These are not people who are out to 'score points' and knowing them as I do, I believe they would much rather Orihuela Town hall cleaned up the coast, but the fact is, the town hall doesn't. The whole point of the clean-up the costa campaign was, and is, to demonstrate to the town hall that people on the coast want to live in a clean environment, with green areas in which children can play safely and streets without litter. Los Verdes acknowledge that litter is not created by town halls, but by people. However, some areas, such as Calle Niagara which enjoyed a grand clean up last week, were left for so long without any attempt by the council to clear them of rubbish that something really had to be done. I went down to take pictures of the volunteers and saw the state of the place for myself. It was truly disgusting. So on the one hand, yes, the Los Verdes campaign is political in that there is a message in there to the town hall to at the very least attempt to clean up places which have been highlighted on several occasions to those in charge, but there is also a wider message to the community that littering in unacceptable. Twenty years ago Britain was the litter-bin of Europe and mindsets have changed considerably since then. If Los Verdes can change mindsets here, then good on them.

In reply to KC1, Koali, John50 and anyone else who hasn't realised, if there is anyone else, of course ELL(iot) SAM(pford) is the pseudonym I use on this and other chat forums where I can. As far as I am aware I am the only one using it.

I am happy to make it clear that, I stand by all comments that I have made, and will make in the future, in any article that I may post on a chat forum or Blog as being relevant to the subject being referred to at that time.

The quotes referred to by Koali were made in respect of the unnecessary, uncontrolled, and unsustainable level of construction that was taking place in Orihuela Costa, with the PP ruling Council, the developers and the constructors not giving a dam, with as I said their only concern being looking after the interests of each other at the expense of the environment and the residents of Orihuela Costa. My posting was as a warning to prospective buyers to beware, and the many articles that we have read in the papers since then (7th November 2007), about the sufferings of property owners as a result of rogue developers and builders, and the failure of the PP council to control them, in hindsight has been shown to be valid.

To Koali I would say I stand by my statements so stand by your's “Ask that of your bent Councillor” and supply the name and the evidence to the Judiciary.

In answer to John50 it is not and never has been, my intention to run down the Orihuela Costa area, where my home is, but to show the situation as it is in specific areas and how it affects the quality of the environment and peoples lives. I will continue, as will Los Verdes, to highlight any failings of the ruling government to provide the residents of the area with the highest quality of utilities services, cultural and leisure facilities, health services and security of their person and their property, and protection of the environment from wanton destruction. I am not against development of an area as long as it is sustainable development.

I personally, and Los Verdes as an elected party, will always try to suggest constructive changes or alternative approaches to solving any problem where possible, with the People's Litter Pick-up being such an example.

In respect of the motives for Los Verdes in coordinating the Clean up the Costa campaign, and in this instance - Part 2- People's Litter Pick-up, I would suggest to remind you to reread the opening posting on this topic, or the campaign Blog for the overall aims.

“This is a campaign coordinated by Los Verdes (The Green Party) of Orihuela, on behalf of the inhabitants of Orihuela Costa, to make the Town Hall take action against, and clean up, the problem of illegally dumped rubbish of all types, that is evident throughout the area. Yes Ellsam, very commendable and noting your signs informing that an area has been cleaned, an ingenious way to advertise a political party.

The Green Party will have us believing in global warming next, then Father Christmas, then the tooth fairy.
