Raw Sewage Spreads
The first autumn rains which fell on 24th and 28th September were again sufficient to send sewage cascading down the streets of Orihuela Costa and with forecasts of even more stormy weather over this coming weekend, residents are fearing the worst.

The much reported metre high manholes in Calle Lapuslazuli, once again blew and disgorged their foul contents into the neighbouring barranco and down onto the beach at La Zenia and those using the beach, which is still crowded on sunny days, were obviously unaware that they and their children might be sitting on and playing on highly contaminated sand. A spokesman for Orihuela opposition party, C.L.A.R.O, told Round Town news; “There was not a word of warning from the Orihuela authorities, who are only interested in removing the visible signs as soon as possible. The residents in Calle Lapuslazuli, who suffer the most, and have to clear up and repair the broken manholes themselves, are still waiting for Councillor Aniorte and his staff to honour their promise, repeated endlessly throughout the year, that the problem would soon be solved.”

Rivers of Raw Sewage
Reports and photos, in particular those from the widely read Spanish newspaper Informacion, show that the problem is getting worse and is now occuring in many other areas of Orihuela Costa. Their report highlighted the dilapidated pumping station in El Horizonte, which never fails to break down when it rains and which the Town Hall has repeatedly promised would be repaired. The station produces rivers of raw sewage and rainwater which run past the Civic Centre and the Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre, down Las Piscinas barranco and to the beach in Playa Flamenca, where the European Blue flag flies despite the regular contamination which occurs when it rains. A sewage spill also occurred at the pumping station in La Regia, close to the Cabo Roig roundabout. This pumping station has been smelling foully on a daily basis for decades, a sure sign that it needs repair or renewal.

Niagara Sewage Falls
The C.L.A.R.O Spokesman commented; “The problem has been totally ignored by the Town Hall for decades, so it is no surprise that when it rains there is a spectacular sewage spill.” He continued; “We have eye witness reports of extensive sewages spill which occurred between Punta Prima, along the N332, past the Civic Centre and up to Calle Niagara.” According to the witness reports, people were wading through essentially raw sewage in order to get to their homes. One commented; “The smell was awful.” One lady reportedly got a rash on her legs after walking through the water. She said; “Niagara Sewage Falls is what residents are now calling Calle Niagara.” C.L.A.R.O asked; “When is Orihuela Town Hall going to take action to solve this serious and shameful problem, which is getting worse? Why don’t they come up with a big project to renew the deficient sewage system on Orihuela Costa? They have ambitious projects for Orihuela city which are being handsomely financed from the taxes and rate contributions from the one-third of the total municipality population which actually live on the deprived Orihuela Costa.”

Even the Spanish politicians admit it !

Antonia Moreno, the secretary general of the Socialist Party in Orihuela, Alicante, has claimed that there are between 10,000 and 15,000 officially illegal properties in the Orihuela municipality, though in reality there could be as many as 30,000 illegal properties built without appropriate planning permission.

21st century life in Orihuela Costa

Colina La Zenia residents left without water and electricity as developer seeks protection from creditors


250 residents of the Colina La Zenia urbanisation in Orihuela (Alicante, Costa Blanca) have been left without water and electricity after being cut off by a developer seeking protection from its creditors.

Financial difficulties forced the developer of 140 properties in the Colina La Zenia urbanisation near Torrevieja to seek voluntary administration before completing the construction work. 250 residents who had already moved in, and were living off the builders supply, were cut off without warning.

None of the properties have a licence of first occupation (LFO) because of the outstanding building work. A town planning official explains that LFOs cannot be issued because the development is not finished. Without an LFO the residents cannot establish private contracts with the utility companies.

The town hall says it is powerless to help. “It’s a private matter between the builders and developers, and their clients,” explained a town planning official.

Similar situation exist in other parts of Orihuela Costa, admits the official, who refuses to rule out more cases in the coming months. “It all depends whether the banks start lending,” he said.

Orihuela Costa Urbanisation Assault Allegation


The urbanisation on the Orihuela Costa which has been without electricity for 4 months is in the headlines again .

It has been alleged by the president of the urbanisation that he was assaulted both physically and verbally by the builder of the urbanisation for talking to a Costa Blanca newspaper .

The man was walking his dogs one evening when he met the builder and asked for answers about the lack of electricity .

This resulted in him being verbally and physically abused . The incident was witnessed by a neighbour and the matter has been reported to the Guardia Civil .

Six Years Of Misery In Orihuela Costa


When they moved into their new homes six years ago they did not expect to be without electricity but that is what has happened to this urbanisation in Orihuela Costa .

Iberdrola has cut it off because the builder had been supplying the electricity illegaly . Almost 20 homes are affected .

If they want to be reconnected then they have to pay a bill of over 60,000 euros as the builder has refused to pay .

The six families who live there permanently cannot afford to pay and are having to pay 60 euros every week for a generator plus seven euros for petrol .

The residents are asking for help from the town hall .

There used to be a similar tip in Torre near to the footy stadium a few years ago ,but the council dug a trench round the edge of the area to stop any access ,worked ok ,stopped my little treasure hunts ,with my bike and beer crate on the back though
