  • London Press to take up the Orihuela Costa story

Great news! One of the London based tabloids - the Mail - has expressed an interest in my photographs of scenic Orihuela Costa and are very keen to run a story in a few months time about the ongoing problems of this area. I'll keep you all informed.

By the way, and out of interest, one point from the Mail man, how many ex-pat English are out here from fairly poor English council estates but still claiming benefits and unofficially renting out their council houses? There is a lot of interest in the benefits cheats story recently put our by the Dept. for Works and Pensions and supported by the Embassy. 'Cheats in the Sun'. I suppose to them, this would seem like heaven. They don't know any better I suppose. Answers on a post card........

No. Have you looked at the number of viewings each post I initiate makes ? There is very obvious interest and only a few objections by those too blind to see what lays about them.

i have to say that I think KC is obviously a very bored Brit (scot) to be posting on here and the other website forum the rubbish that he does. I have never heard such drivel, and venom against his own people and the spanish. Why is he living here. I know he says he cant go back but why is he carrying on this vendetta against everyone. I am afraid he has become one of the people that has nothing better to do. I suspect he would be exactly the same wherever he lived. Just go and get a life and enjoy what you have and leave others to enjoy theirs. Thank you.

I find it ironic that as a Scot you are not only claiming the English ex-pats are now benefit fraudsters but that you are insinuating that OC has turned down hill because English people are sub letting their council houses out and moving to OC, which if you check is minor and most if not all turn a blind eye to it as they are still receiving their rent.

Your vile hatred seems to have turned you racist, you try and cover it but your low intelligence just shows your self pity.

I am really glad you can not return to our beautiful land as you do not deserve it, the British people don't want your sort back thank you.

Just one small point, you have failed to mention the amount of ex pats claiming winter fuel allowance whilst living abroad, no doubt you get the readies and I am sure the Mail will investigate yourself before sticking their neck out for a proven racist. If they don't its not to hard to get your ISP and details and forward onto the correct agency.

This is very interesting - who did you speak to at The Mail - or who showed an interest from The Mail?

A researcher for an Andy Levy and no, I get no Social Benefits from the DWP not even Winter Fuel allowance. It is not that cold here anyway and I would not be justified in claiming it. My comments did not interest them - the photographs have. After all, a picture speaks a thousand words does it not ?

No problems once they are checked then.

I would have thought a more worth while issue would be child abuse in Spain and if and a big if what the local government are doing to stop it, or do they still believe its a cultural thing?

Just an idea to keep you busy is all.

You also didnt answer my question in regards to your community charges, are you paying them? if so why hasnt your president done anything?

The Community Charge is 380 euros a year but that does not cover the public streets around and about this area but only things that lay inside the actual urbanisation, insurance etc. IBI is 185 euros a year and a few cents.

I looked at these photographs and they seem to have been taken over a period of time. Some of the photographs are not recent ones.
I would think that if I or anyone else were interested, they could go around any city in Europe and look for similar scenes to take photograps of. I know that in my own city I could spend one day driving around and look for and find similar, but why would I want to do that??

I don´t agree with all KC1 comments and as far as the pictures are concerned I could´nt see much wrong with them, in regards to those type of pictures, similar pictures could be taken anywhere, at any time, anywhere in the world.

However his comments and pictures do give an insight into what has happened here that has led to the ruin of the area.

Torrevieja was always a Spanish holiday location with many people in Barcelona and Madrid owning properties here and visiting for holidays.
20 years ago most of the imigrants to the Torrevieja area were retired people of all ages, most if not all were financially secure, wise to living within their means, looking for a cheaper way and better climate to spend their relaxing years.
Over a period of 10 years many of those same people along with others invested in land, properties or business which enhanced the area and many used the businesses they started as a way of keeping busy as well as earning a small income from their investments ( a good investment in those days).
Most of the bars, restaurants etc were spanish with very few British or Irish businesses in the area.
Untimitly those same people, by their actions encouraged others to follow, selling on their properties, land, businesses etc.
The growth in the area and the potential wealth, encouraged entrepenours and those looking to exploit the growth to follow.
The increase in wealth from house sales and council house sales in the UK as well excellant pension schemes, share issues etc created in the 70´s 80´90´ created a new breed of money people, many at long last being in a position to *live the dream*.
The problem with that is that most and even many of those today were not business people with long term plans, they were looking to make money quickly, sell up and move on.
Many if not all, did this successfully but it led to the next people in line continuing this trend, with each new arrival hoping to make their fortune.
During the past 10 years the publicity built up by crooks, conmen, scam artists gave the impression that all you needed to do was buy something wait a few months and then sell it on at a great profit, great idea and for many it worked, but like any network or pyramid selling, sooner or later it dries up because people become wise, too many lose money or there just is´nt enough people available to continue.
5 years ago there was´nt a day went by without plane loads of people arriving queuing up to buy houses that were over priced by robbing estate agents using someone elses investment to make very high commissions, in many cases the seller not actually knowing how much the house was sold for and the buyer unaware that if they had bought direct from the seller the price could have been anything up to 30% cheaper.

Torrevieja property is just pyramid selling on a bigger scale.

                            What do we have now!!!!!!!!!
Thousands of houses unsold, Thousands of businesses closed down with many more near closure. People scraping a living just to survive, many people working in all types of employment, unregistered, unlicensed and uninsured.
Some urbanisations looking like ghettos with maybe only one family actually living permantly in a street, house reppossions, unpaid bills, unpaid mortgages.
I dis-agree with the comments on crime, we have an element of petty crime and house breaking but it is nothing more.
We don´t want people to stop coming here, we don´t want to stop people from *living the dream* but we do want those who do not contribute and those who stop decent people from enjoying their life or the fruits of their efforts to leave.

It is not the area, its not the Townhall and it is certainly not the Spanish who need to improve, its the quality of those around us who should put up or get out and leave the rest of us in peace.
