It's a reporter's worst nightmare, one wrong digit in a phone number, printed in a newspaper, can be miserable for the unsuspecting recipient of calls. Which is just what I've managed to do this week in an article about a culture event. The article from this week's Coastrider is copied below, and now contains the correct phone numbers. A big sorry to the person whose number I printed by mistake, and sorry to the PSOE for the error.
PSOE brings Hernández to the coast
The PSOE opposition party of Orihuela has organised a cultural evening, set to take place on Tuesday 28 October, to share the works of Orihuela-born poet, Miguel Hernández, with citizens of Orihuela Costa.
The event forms part of the PSOE’s ‘Integrate’ culture programme and will feature recitals of the famous poet’s works spoken in Spanish, English and German, together with music, dance and opera. It is set to take place at Asturias Restaurant.
Special guests at the recital will include members of the Raquel Peña Dance Academy who will perform classical Spanish dance, Company Women Business Woman of the Year 2007, Jane Cronin who will read several poems, and German opera soprano, Uta Meager who will sing opera arias in Italian, German and English. PSOE committee member, Francisco F Javier Díaz will be one of two guitarists to perform classical Spanish music at the event, and PSOE opposition councillor Ana Mas, will deliver poetry in her native Spanish.
PSOE opposition councillor for the coast, Rosa Martinez said: "It will be a privilege to host this unique cultural event as part of the PSOE Integrate culture programme. It is an opportunity for us to share the works of the poet Miguel Hernández with people of other nationalities living in Orihuela Costa. After all, Miguel Hernández's work has been translated into more than 20 different languages. The evening will be rich with Spanish culture."
The PSOE party, which represents the largest opposition to the ruling government in Orihuela, is working to bring a number of cultural activities to the coast to enable European citizens to integrate into the Spanish way of life, and to learn about the many different nationalities living in Orihuela Costa. Previously, the PSOE committee on the coast has hosted a flamenco evening and a German Oktoberfest.
Among the poems to be featured at the recital is one of the poet’s most well-known works, Nanas de la cebolla, written by Hernández in 1939 while he was in prison. It is a tragic piece in which he responds to a letter from his wife, Josefina Manresa, who at the time was surviving in poverty by eating bread and onions. The emotional Elegía, which was composed in 1936 in memory of the poet’s friend, Ramón Sijé, who died at an early age, will also be among the featured works.
The event is being organised by the PSOE in collaboration with the Asociación Cultural “Orihuela 2010”. Orihuela will be the focus of the national centenary celebrations of the life and works of Miguel Hernández, set to take place in 2010.
Tickets for this unique cultural event cost 5€, which will include drinks and nibbles, and can be purchased only at the PSOE office inside the Asturias Restaurant between 11am and 1pm every weekday. There are only a limited number of tickets available. A programme containing information about the poet and his works will be available at the event in Spanish, English and German.
