What is the law here as somebody told me that they have to be in a crate in the back and not just on there seatbelt harness, they said this law come in affect early last year but i didn't know anything about this till Dec and have had numerous guardia & local police stroking my dogs whilst he's had his head out the window at traffic lights, nobodys ever even said anything to me about it.

Firstly, and I might be wrong, the car must have a properly fitted dog guard, not one that you get from Argos etc for £9.99. which collapses at the slightest impact.
Secondly, if you allow a dog to sit on a passenger seat with it's head out of the window or allow a dog in the vehicle unrestrained then you are not a fit person to have care of a dog.
You can explain the danger to a child but a dog is reliant upon you to have some sense.

Dogs in cars
Could someone please tell me where I can find official info regarding the carriage of dogs in cars. Mine just sleeps in the back (unrestrained) only waking up when she is told "we are there". We travel to Spain at least 2 times a year and if she should "legally" be restained we will do it if not things stay as they are.

I can't refer you to the legislation but the following might help:-
Dog Car Safety Harness or Seat Belt (keep you and your dog safe)
Posted By the three dog blogger on November 20, 2008
Here in Spain it is the law that all Dogs in cars must either be in the back with a grill stopping them being able to get in to the back seat or if they are in the back seat they must have a safety harness or dog car seat belt. They take Dog Car Safety very seriously.
This is a fantastic idea, especially if you have a slightly rowdy or very nervous dog. It stops the dogs getting in to the front of the car and causing untold problems whilst driving but also stops them inflicting great damage on you or them in the case of an accident.
A Dog Harness for car safety is worth the minimal invest it costs. There are a variety of different styles from a simple attachment that clips on to the collar and then in to the seatbelt clip to a complete harness that will really make sure they are staying put.
This means in the event of a crash your dog (large or small) will be the safest it can be and will stop it from flying in to the front if you have to break suddenly. Dog car seat belts are also fantastic if you have a nervy dog that always wants to get in the front which can be enormously distracting and extremely dangerous.
So whether or not it is the law in your country, pick the one most suitable for your dogs size and temperament. This really is something you should not be without when you have dogs in cars.

I think this has changed as mine are in the back seat with car harness's & seatbelt clips but with the back window down so they can smell the air and have a look about, my 2 went to kennels whilst i was in the UK at New Year and she wouldn't take them unless they went in a crate in the back. Maybe its different in each municipal like a lot of things as what if you didn't have an estate or hatchback car ?? I think a trip to the police station muight be in order to verify things.
and Gail tut tut tut tut for having your dogs unrestrained, the forum police aka sugar will be having at dig at you dog ownership soon

There is no way we would put our or our dogs life at risk...honestly!!! We have a large car with the back seat folded down and she stays in her bed, she's nearly 13 years old , and while travelling all luggage etc is covered with a bungee net so no fears of anything else moving onto her either, but if we have to have her restrained we will do so without question.

I can get were your coming from, but i would have her restrained in some way or form as it may not be you who has the accident it could be caused by somebody else and you wouldn't want to have her flying through the windscreen especially at her time of life. Remember the UK advert of a unrestrained child in the back is like equivalent to a 5 ton coming at you if you hit somebody at 40 mph ???
