Mossy - You will need an NIE number to pay the various Spanish taxes due (Patrimonio, Renta, IBI etc). It acts a bit like a UK National Insurance number, ensuring that the taxes paid are credited as having been paid by you.
Amanda, if you need help completing the form just re-post.
Yes you definitely do need it, and unfortunately you now have to do all the legwork yourself (as you have to apply in person - can't get your solicitor to do it for you anymore).
I got mine last year (after buying my property even though you're supposed to have it beforehand to pay all the necessary taxes) and will need it later this year to pay all the relevant Spanish taxes due. Bear in mind that anyone named on your deeds will need a number, as they'll ALL be liable for tax. This means they will ALL have to apply in person.
I managed to find the instructions but....... on section 2 you have to choose from Economico, Professional or Social and I am not sure what I should write.
We are renting a place for six months or so before buying and I will not be working as my parter will commute from the UK can anyone advise me what I should write.
Can I also say what a fantastic website this is I don't know what I would have done without the advice I have obtained and the laughs I have had reading peoples replys.
Hiya,
Apparently there's a new office for processing NIE numbers in Torrevieja town, in the Square where the windmill stands near Calle Tomillo / Ronda Ricardo La Fuente.
Might save you a trip out of town?
I thought it was only us lot that needed NIEs - in fact I thought that the E in NIE stood for Extranjero (Foreigner).
I believe that Spaniards have a different type of ID No.
Perhaps someone in the know could please confirm or contradict.
A poster's client had gone to the new office to apply for an NIE number, and was told that the office was there to renew ID cards for Spanish nationals. Apparently a report in one of last week's local papers confirmed this, but again, I have no first-hand knowledge as yet.
