How do people get rid of wasp nests?

Hi, I would take a guess at your wasps being a variety called paper wasps. They are the ones who make the small cone or tree shaped nests. Luckily they are one of the less aggresive species so you should be able to remove them yourself. Please remember though that if there is a large population call out a specialist company.
There are various ways of getting rid of a small wasps nest. The first and easiest is to buy a tin of wasp and hornet spray and follow the instructions.

You can also use expanding foam to cover the nest and then after a few days just cut it down. Another way is to use something like a mesh bag with a drawstring top to enclose the nest. One the net is in place tighten the string which cuts off the nest and traps the whole lot in the bag.

Whatever way you want to go, be carefull and attack at night as they are less liverly.

Hi Chris and Mary, friends of ours have some social events at their place a few times in the year, it's always held a few metres away from the front of their house, at the edge of a forest, under the pine trees, but generally, over the years, every time, we get bit to pieces by sandflies. 2 questions, firstly, are there any *good* repellents that you can apply to your skin to keep the sandflies away, and secondly, I was thinking of setting up some traps for them nearby, are there any traps for sandflies ?

Any help appreciated.

Hi, firstly the name sand fly is a little misleading as the insect is not a fly and lives nowhere near beaches or sand. It is actually a ting mosquito that feeds primarily from dusk till dawn when temperatures reach about 20 degrees Centigrade. There are a couple of things that have been known to repel them, but as with most things what works for one person wont work for another. DEET has been used for over 40 years with good results although there are questions over the possible long term health implications of it. Cat nip oil is even more effective and is safe to use. The only place I have found it for sale though is on the net. The way to use it is to mix it with carrier oil and apply liberally to exposed skin.

We do sell traps that catch the sand fly and all types of biting insect. They are on our website but if you want more specific information just drop me a line. I don’t want get in trouble by advertising on the forum
