  • Security grills and locksmiths

Having read the helpful advice on this forum, I'm very keen to change the locks to my apartment once I take ownership.

Can anyone recommend a good, dependable locksmiths near the Altos De La Bahia area?

Once done, is it still worth fitting a security grill even after fitting a 4-5 lever mortice lock? Are the local burglars really that determined?

It all depends of the strength of your door and it's frame, and also if the door opens outwards.
If you have two five lever mortice deadlocks in a 35mm thick solid hardwood door with a 40mm thick solid hardwood frame, provided the locks have metal striking and catch plates you should be OK. Howver if the door opens outwards you need two hinge bolts.
Finally good door protection is not much use unless you have your accessible windows protected also.
I have used Kevin Fitzpatrick to fit an ideal strong metal gate at the front of my apartment door and the job he did was excellent. He has years of experience in this work and knows his business. His phone no. is 067364197.

        Security locks

Dermot is that number right or is something missing. Also do you know anybody that does tiling, we have a 65 sq metre garden area that we want probably part tiled and the rest with chippings and flowers beds in it. Thanks for any help.

          Tiling

I dont know anyone who can do your tiling, but I would employ Spanish labour, they tend to do an excellent job at reasonable rates

            Hi UT.

Bear in mind that burglars will always look for the soft target. Whether you need them or not, if you are the only property in the street without grilles you will become a target.

As for door locks, these are easily changed if you're reasonably DIY minded. Put the key in the lock and open the door. Leave the key where it is. On the open door edge you should see a screw head where the locking bar comes out. Undo this screw and remove it. You will then need to turn the key slowly while pulling it (the key) towards you. The lock barrel will then slide out of the frame. Leave someone sitting in the doorway while you trot down to the local Fereteria, show him the lock and ask for 'El mismo, por favor'. Said feret will sell you a new barrel for a few euros which you can then fit back back into the door. Much cheaper than locksmiths, and you have the personal satisfaction of knowing that YOU have all the keys for that lock.

            HTH,

            Chris.

                  Hi Iain.

There's a really good one at the Rioja commercial centre. Coming from Villamartin head towards La Zenia. As you cross the canal before you get to Los Dolses cc turn right (actually alongside the canal). Turn right at the end and after about 50 yards the road will split - take the left-hand fork and the Rioja cc is directly on your left. Looking at the cc from that perspective, the fereteria is on the same level as the road on the left-hand side. The owner is German, speaks good English, and is very helpful.

                  Chris.
