VAT refund on UK purchases shipped to Spain

I recall previous postings about buying furniture in the UK and having it shipped to Spain covering this cost by reclaiming the VAT. It sounds too good to be true that VAT can be recovered for purchases in one EU country going to another EU country!
Can someone who has actually done this confirm the mechanics of reclaiming the UK VAT. Is Spanish VAT not applicable when imported to Spain?
Any advise welcome from those who have been through the process

I would be very interested to know what it cost you for shipping your 3 piece settee & armchair to your address in Spain.
Not to compare how cost effective the VAT is but because we want to send our comfotable (not brand new) suite to our home in Torrevieja. We are already furnished so only want to send this and perhaps another item of furniture.
How do you manage to be in UK to send it and Spain to receive it ?
If the shipping costs are too high it might be more cost effective to buy a new luxury suite in Torrevieja.

Hi,
We looked into the vat and then added everything up and decided at the end of the day it was down to a toss of a coin.I am a non resident so I could not see a saving.I was told the good quality furniture in Spain would be a lot dearer ,but there are that many muebles tiendas ,that bargains are out there,as they are here.
I would have a good look in Spain first,and that will make your mind for you one way or the other.
