Looking around the area

Hi,
Moving towards retiring to the area. Want to look around the different areas to start making decisions where to start looking for a property.
Do not at this stage fancy a 'inspection tour' really want to see what is on offer area wise, the property comes later.
Anybody have ideas what is the best way to go about this, obviously just turning up and wandering around is probably not the best way.
