CB News! (What's Not On)

Quite clearly the 'What's On' section of the Costa Blanca News thinks the Costa Blanca starts at Alicante and finishes at Peniscola, near Barcelona.

Today's supplement, The Post is typical. Of seven featured events not a single one is south of Alicante. I checked through a few back issues of the CBN. The Costa Update section is 2/3rds north of Alicante; Altea, Javea, Moraira, Jalon, Denia, Alfa etc. Santa Pola to Cartegena barely gets a look in.

There is definate favouritism. Some entertainers have their information included 'on the nod' whilst others are repeatedly ignored. Some entertainers have their gigs repeated in several issues, word for word. Again, really good entertainers from and around Torrevieja are cold-shouldered.

The CBN is not cheap; you could buy a paperback for its cover price. Why are Torrevieja's talented entertainers being excluded from the What's On and Costa Update sections? Why are we, and the southern section advertisers, subsidising venues, gigs, and entertainers up the coast from Alicante?

This has always been the case. A big paper but one that is primarily targeted at Costa Blanca North. Regarding entertainment, they have always 'talked' a good story. Last year they 'tied up' the press rights to the Police concert BUT, look at archives from the paper and you'll find very little info on the Police nor the support act or the concert.

I spoke with management from Elvis Costello, the support act, and they were unaware of any involvement from the paper.

Their 'hard' news is very good, but entertainment is all but non existent down here.

The Post is more fun and if something is of interest, entertainment or otherwise, I've found them much more open to ideas than the CBN

A good take on it, Keith. The CBN started I think in the early seventies when they had things very much their own way. Times have changed of course. There is intense competition out there - and the Internet. When I counted this morning I see this particular post, on several forums, had been read several hundred times.

If each of those readers think it is a topical point of interest and bring it into conversation then the tidal wave of southern Costa Blanca resentment will build further to effect their advertising and sales.

They can't afford that loss of goodwill; not these recessionary days; the time for prima donnas has passed.

What I found particularly irritating was this week's Post. Along the top of its masthead (title) the towns' which it serves: All eight of them are southern Costa Blanca. The What's On section? All seven of them were northern Costa Blanca. How's that for offensive impudence, which seems to go well with their corporate arrogance.

Why would they cover Cartagena it is in the Costa Calida area.

Cartagena is a few miles south of Los Alcazares. The Post (CBN South), according to its own masthead, is distributed Gran Alacant, Santa Pola, Benijofar, Torrevieja, Orihuela, San Miguel, San Pedro del Pinatar -- AND Los Alcazarez - AND SURROUNDING AREAS.

Leaving the splitting of kilometres to one side, the point made remains valid. Of nearly 400 forum post readers no one has so far cared to deny it. How could they?

Entertainment south of Alicante rarely gets a mention. One only has to glance through back issues to see that in the SOUTHERN CBN 80 percent of Costa Update features northern events and as much as 90 percent of the semi-display is for north of Alicante events too. How can anyone defend that? I doubt the editor could though he has chosen to ignore the issue.

The location of the head office and publication is an irrelevance, which has nothing whatsoever to do with distribution.

We do not have a problem with the EWN, Leader or Coastrider, so why bring them to the debate? The CR as it so happens is distributed up as far as Javea - and The Leader is now distributed on the Costa del Sol.
