I have just posted a FREE advert on here. What struck me most was how few are taking advantage of this and similar opportunities to set their stall out. PUMA has been front page news for weeks. Goodness knows how many are checking out their website. Free adverts on there too. No one appears to be interested but prefer writing cheques out to newspapers.
If when reminiscing about the Costas I was asked what struck me most about Mediterranean Spain it would be the total lack of business / marketing acumen. If I was to sum it up in one word it would be 'clueless'. I am not at all surprised that tourism to Turkey (and other places more difficult to reach) are enjoying a boom.
I could write a tongue in cheek book about the business own goals in this region. Some are breath-taking failures. Unacceptable at any time, let alone during a recession. Businesses are going bust when similar are thriving. But will they listen? Take advice? No! An emphatic no.
I am not alone in this. I bang on about it from time to time. If nothing else it gives me the satisfaction of hearing from others who, with similar experience, agree. John Harvey-Jones and Alan Sugar would spend a day or two here and say; 'forget it; can't do anything with them.'
Call me an opinionated g** if you like. I can take it. On the plus side of things it is thirty-five years since I saw a wage packet. Since, if I haven't sold I haven't ate. That is when you truly know what you're worth.
For twenty-years I assessed and mentored small and large businesses for the UK's most prestigious quality assurance body. I have been a retailer, publisher, writer, trainer, journalist, estate agent; pretty versatile at a wide range of businesses.
There's few challenges I haven't met but Costa Blanca's tourist-related and other businesses; they're too big a mountain to climb for me. Right, where's the train that Harvey-Jones and Alan Sugar just got on. They have company. I suppose this will bring a few brick-bats but someone needs to say it.
