  • UPGRADED ELECTRICITY SUPPLY & IBERDROLA

We have arranged for our builders to upgrade our electricity supply after reading lots of posts about only being able to many appliances on at once. They are charging 270 euros plus VAT for changing the size of the cable, size of the amp to 40 am inside and out and this will give us 9.20 kw.

We understand that most builders are only supplying 5.75 kw which, if you have 3 air con units plus all other appliances and, of course, some form of heating in the winter, would not be enough.

They are going to request the higher tariff supply for us when sorting our electricity supply.

We have been given various tariffs charges per two months for the highest supply available. This is just the standing charge. Does anyone know how much the usage charge is on top of the standing charge? Have found an Iberdrola website but no prices on it.

Is there a peak and off-peak cost in Spain and if so does anyone know how much these are and the times?

Depending how big your house is and if you are staying in Spain all year. I would think 5.5kw would be big enough.

I have 5.5KW and I can run 3 x air cons, oven, 4 rings, hot water heater, kettle, telly, lights and it still did not trip my breaker.

Remember you are paying for the larger supply all year regardless if you use high amounts of electricity.

Not all at the same time George !!
But I agree with a bit of care, 5.5Kw is plenty enough for holiday use.

Yes all at the same time.
But not for long before I turned them off.
Obviously some might have been cutting in and out with the thermostats. But they would be doing that normally anyway.

          And i was surprised myself.

              Electrics

I also have 5.5kw supply but my problem is two bedroom AC units are run off a 10amp breaker in the consumer unit, this circuit is running just below its trip level if I use both AC units. My point is 5.5Kw should be ample if the load is distributed correctly, if not you will still get local circuit breakers tripping in the consumer unit

They do seem to run some sockets off the 10amp "lighting" circuit. In the end I did is little survey to find which sockets were 10 amp and which 15 and try to use heaters and things on the higher rated sockets.

Something to watch out for then, Gilly. You may end up paying for a higher supply rating, but still have tripping problems if the load isn't distributed properly.
