It all started last April when our cat had to be put down after 15 years. He had cancer of the tongue. We said then that as we were pensioners we would not take on another pet. One morning we opened the door and a little ginger cat appeared. We felt a little sorry for it and my wife gave it some food that we had kept for our own cat.

After a couple of weeks it became obvious that our new visiter was pregnant. She kept coming in the morning and evening. One evening she turned up with five kittens and left them with us. She would return to nurse the kittens but it seemed that she had really decided that we should take care of her family. By this time her husband and his friend turned up. We were still feeding the original cat and her family so it seemed unkind not to feed her spouse. He seemed to have some friends when came with him.

In august it once again became obvious that she was pregnant again and once again she produced another 6 kittens. By this time we had 11 kittens, the mother and her husband and his friend.

We contacted International rescue who are a charity based in UK. They came on October and were able to neuter the Mother and three of her femail kittens.

Our problem is that the communty here do not seem to like cats even though they do not effect them. We do not mind having one or two cats but 14 is ridiculous. What can we do ?

    Hi Peter,

I fear that me and my husband are heading in the same direction. We started to feed a young tom cat a few months ago and then we took pity on a tiny little female cat, who we assume is still very young. Unfortunately they are so nervous of us we've been unable to catch them in order to have them neutered. We fear the day she brings her kittens to us and after reading your story I'm even more determened to get her neutered.

I don't have an answer for you, but maybe you could get in touch with one of the many charities and see if they can help by taking some of the young cats off you.

    Good luck

      Hi Julskin

I must say that the kittens are wonderful to watch running and playing around the flat and its amazing how clean they are. We have provided litter trays and they always use them. Its also wonderful to see the older kittens look after the young ones. In fact one of the older kittens acts like a mother to the second litter.

There is a sanctury in Alicanti but I hear that they do put the cats down. I may be wrong but I do not want to chance it. There is of course the Cat man but he only seems to deal with one cat at a time.

They are of course nervous but we do have three which sit on our knee. The others are impossible to catch especially the boys and one has a bad leg but I cant catch it and take it to the vet.

The obvious answer is of course to stop feeding them but I just cant do that.

Let this be a warning don't feed the wild cats unless you want the hassle and flees that go with them.
