For some reason I misread your post and having seen a dog lose an eye from a stone thrown up by a vehicle in front I did, as you rightly say, jump to a conclusion and therefor apologize.

I just get angry when I see unrestrained dogs sat on passenger seats in cars and the dangers inherent in such behaviour.

sugar apology accepted i'm a member of quite a few different forums but mostly dog ones and you get quite a few that jump to conclusions without knowing the full story, no problem then

anyway Gail whats wrong with bringing your dog out in high season ?? Mine are there 24/7 and bulldogs are prone to overheating due to there soft pallette, short muzzles and heavy bodies but as long as you take precautions all is good, make sure there's shade for somewhere for the dog to go when she gets to warm, plenty of fresh water about *we have about 8 bowls around the house/garden in strategic places* and a JIF lemon, why the jif lemon you may ask well when a dog overheats & pants excessivly they kind of pant with a bit of a roar involved its white phlegm in there throat, squeeze a dash of lemon down her throat and the citric acid in lemon juice will break it down. To cool a dog off if she gets heat exaustion, submerge her stomach in water as she will cool off quicker, walk her early morning or late at night when its coolest and they won't burn there feet on the pavement.

Thanks again, not heard of the jif lemon one before but we always manage very well with her and give her walks out of the heat of the day. If she has a chance to swim she is there...so no problems with water and even a good play with a hosepipe for a couple of minutes does the trick if she gets a bit warm. If we were there 24/7 like you (lucky you!!) I'm sure she would adapt very quickly, but if I have any other dog questions I'll post a message.

My 2 have a small pool 6ft x 6ft x 4ft to play in and both have lifejackets to help with the bouyancy when in the sea as my bulldog is a bit heavy

Just a quick update - Polly has now got a car harness (a RAC one)- and will be using it!! Must say if anyone else thinks of buying one of these you will probably need a size larger than it says on the box, so better to take your dog to try it on before buying as we did - if you've got a nice pet shop like the one we use and a treat comes at the end of the fitting it does help!!

With respect though, Orange Grove...if you read through the whole thread you will see that I have now got a harness. If you have a dog that happily sleeps in its bed for the whole time and doesn't leap around etc, is not on a seat but in the back on the floor behind seats you don't neccessarily see the danger, but once it has been pointed out to me I have recified it immediately OK!

No problem, Gail. Glad Polly is safer now. Our pets are precious & we do all we can to protect them, even from posters on here, ahem !
