British in Orihuela Costa

Share on:

Orihuela is the area in Spain with the most registered British citizens

12.7% of the population registered in Orihuela (10,025 people), are British citizens

But if you take a walk through the center of Orihuela town, you will see very few Brits!

All these ex-residents of Great Britain are concentrated in the Oriolana coastal area, renamed Orihuela Costa.

The Villamartin urbanisation (La Zenia) has been a consolidated “British terrain” for more than 30 years, ranking above other tourist towns such as Benidorm, Torremolinos or Fuengirola in terms of British citizens per square metre.

Undoubtedly, the contribution that all these foreign residents make to the municipal coffers through taxes represents some big benefits for the Orihuela town hall, despite the fact that according to some neighbourhood associations such as AVOCA (Orihuela Costa neighbourhood association), they don’t feel compensated with the municipal services they receive.

The census of British citizens registered in Torrevieja (5,200) has grown by 10% since Brexit.

This multicultural richness allows us to enjoy typical British environments such as the Villamartin Plaza entertainment area, where many citizens of Spanish origin come to practice their English while having a pint or even working as waiters during the high season.

On the contrary, the British residents in the area often go to typical Spanish restaurants such as Los Cucalos, where they find a cuisine that maintains the local essence in terms of ingredients, price and, of course, fun.
