Visit the Torrevieja Printing Museum, a sanctuary for history buffs and a living testament to the dedication and love of the art of printing.
The Torrevieja Printing Museum is a treasure that captures the essence of an almost forgotten era.
The museum is located at Calle Bazán, 53 and opens its doors every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., offering free admission to a world that many thought was lost. For those with more restrictive schedules, visits can be arranged outside of these hours, thus ensuring that no one misses out on the opportunity to explore this unique collection.
Miguel Aráez Suárez is the creator of this museum, and describes printing as a mechanical method of reproducing texts and images on paper by applying ink to metal pieces, it is an art that has evolved significantly over time. However, in this museum, the artisanal and classic way of this technique is preserved.
From the 1950s until his retirement, Miguel Aráez Suárez worked in printing, specialising as a printer and typesetter. Faced with the advent of new technologies, he made the brave decision to preserve a complete classical printing press, which today forms a fundamental part of the museum.
Pieces that can be found in the museum:
- Fifteen sets of printers drawers of different sizes.
- Almost three hundred boxes with different fonts.
- Two manual Minerva printing machines.
- An automatic Minerva printing machine.
- Test machines.
- Binding presses.
- Guillotines.
- Hole punches.
One of the most emotional moments of the visit is the demonstration of the machine used in the first printing press in Torrevieja, with which the local weekly “Vista Alegre” was printed. This machine allows visitors to see in action the composition of a page with movable lead typeface, recalling the first presentation of the weekly in 1955.
In addition, the museum has a “curiosities” section, where postcards, trading cards, typewriters, padlocks and keys, among other objects that Miguel has collected over the years, are exhibited.
Miguel hopes that this “small inventory” will keep the interest alive in future generations and serve as a testimony of what our past was like in the face of today’s rapid technological evolution.
