The sound of sirens woke many residents in Torrevieja very early this morning.
According to eyewitnesses, at 6:17am what appears to have been an explosion destroyed a first floor balcony of a house located on Calle Diego Ramírez near Calle Apolo de Torrevieja.
Several teams of police, civil guard and firefighters arrived at the scene.
Some cars parked on the street have been hit by rubble.
The structural damage has prevented some neighbors from leaving the building through the entrance door, so the firefighters have advised residents to exit via the terrace.
Fortunately the house was empty and there have been no victims.
According to information provided by firefighters, in the house where the explosion occurred, there were several gas and gasoline cylinders.
The explosion was very powerful, devastating the entire partition of the house, including the dividing wall of the adjoining house. The shockwave and pressure has thrown rubble and furniture onto the street which has reached the facade of the building opposite.
The building has been evacuated and the municipal technicians are assessing its habitability.
The Civil Guard is is in charge of investigating the cause of the explosion.
