PROGRAMME OF FIESTAS IN HONOUR OF THE VIRGIN DEL CARMEN
On Saturday, July 16th, the image of the Virgin will float past on a boat.
The Virgen del Carmen, is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.
The Torrevieja Fishermen’s Guild and the Torrevieja Town Hall Fiestas Department have prepared a program of activities for the celebration of this festivity.
A Floral Offering will be held on Saturday, July 9th at the end of the solemn mass in the Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (8pm).
The band of the Torrevejense Musical Union will accompany the offering to the Monument to the “Man of the Sea“, where symbolically, a crown of flowers is thrown into the sea in memory of all the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the sea.
At the end of the offering, the Choral Mass “José Hódar” will sing the Salve Marinera.
On Saturday, July 16th, there is the fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen and the following events will be held:
8am A musical procession will pass through the streets of the town, traditionally to wake people up.
Next, in the port of Torrevieja, the MARITIME CUCAÑA will be held, which consists of walking barefoot on a thick wooden post smeared with grease to reach a little flag at the end of the post.
8pm Solemn Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception and perfermed by the “José Hódar” Choral Mass, directed by Miguel Guerrero. At the end of the mass, the procession of the Virgen del Carmen will begin until it reaches the Fishing Port, where the image of the Virgin will be placed on a boat to start the maritime procession.
At the end of the boat journey the Salve Marinera will be sung and there will be a fireworks display, then the procession will return to the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
