Types of Public Holidays in Spain

In Spain, public holidays fall into three main categories:

National Days (10 days)

These are the holidays that are celebrated throughout the country and are usually the same every year. These days are:

  • January 1 (New Year’s Eve)
  • January 6 (Three Kings Day)
  • Good Friday (changes every year)
  • May 1 (Labor Day)
  • August 15 (Virgin of the Assumption)
  • October 12 (Columbus Day)
  • November 1 (Feast of All Saints, influenced by Halloween)
  • December 6 (Spanish Constitution Day)
  • December 8 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception)
  • December 25 (Christmas)

Days of Each Autonomy (3 days)

Each autonomous community of Spain has the freedom to establish three additional holidays. These days may vary depending on the region and although they are always the same, but they may have some variation and are determined by the political groups of each community during the month of September prior to next year.

Local Days (2 days)

Local holidays are specific to each municipality and may coincide with religious celebrations or events important to the town or city. Decisions on these days are taken by local political groups and are announced at the end of September of the previous year.
